With the support of Lander County, the Greater Austin Chamber of Commerce, and others, MSDCF has been successful in obtaining funding for a Visitor's Center in Austin.
Construction on the $650,000 center is expected to commence sometime during the Spring of 2009. The agreement between the Nevada Department of Transportation (NDOT) and Lander County has been finalized and now the preliminary work begins including selecting a consultant. The design phase will follow and construction is still on schedule.
The Center will consist of picnic tables, benches, water fountains, restrooms, a presentation stage, and informational kiosks for travelers and visitors to Austin. It will be build at the corner of Virginia and Main Streets in a location formerly occupied by the Hogan Hotel (Austin Hotel) which burned in 1977.
Below are pictures of the site currently and an artist's conception of the new facility.
